A flag-hoisting campaign was yesterday held at Balai Raya Sungai Teraban, hosted by the Information Department in collaboration with the Kg Sungai Teraban Consultative Council to mark His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's upcoming 66th birthday celebration.
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs Dr Awg Hj Affendy bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Awg Hj Abidin was the guest of honour at the event.
The day saw 100 senior citizens and residents of Kg Sg Teraban in the Belait District receiving national flags, and a 'Bendera Negara' briefing delivered by the Assistant Chief of Adat Istiadat Negara, Pg Dr Hidop bin Pg Hj Samsuddin.
During the briefing, Pg Dr Hidop touched on the significant functions and roles of the Brunei national flag, as well as the rules and common mistakes made when hoisting a flag.
The event was also further enlivened by a poetry presentation entitled 'Kibaran Bendera Negara,' which was composed by Hj Jawawi bin Hj Ahmad and recited by Anis Elyana binti Anuar from Sungai Teraban Primary School. A video clip titled 'Kibarkan Dengan Megah Bendera Negara' was also shown.
The aim of the campaign is to support efforts by government agencies to encourage the population to hoist the national flag.
The Information Department has taken steps to organise the flag hoisting campaign as part of efforts to instil a sense of responsibility among citizens in raising the national flag. This is based on observations that some private residences fail to fly the flag to commemorate the National Day and His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's birthday celebrations.
The campaign hopes to provide information on the roles and functions of the national flag as a symbol of the nation's pride, spirit and decorum, apart from raising the spirit of patriotism among Bruneians as a way to show their undivided loyalty to the ruler and to further encourage the culture of flying the national flag to mark major events in the country.
The Belait District is the second district to host the event and it will be extended to the Temburong and Tutong Districts as well.

Information Department in collaboration with Scholarship Division, Ministry of Education organising a Civic Course for Bruneian studying abroad that will be held from Monday, January 14 to Thursday, January 17. The 4 days event will be held at Dewan Pengiran Setia Negara, Information Department, Old Airport in Berakas and also at the SEAMEO Voctech Regional Centre, Gadong.
The guest of honour during the opening ceremony is Minister of Home Affairs Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman.
