“Yan Lipao” Basketry

Yan lipao basketry from the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat is widely recognized for the meticulous delicacy of the craftsmanship involved in forming the contemporary designs, which are produced to exacting standards.
The traditional basketwork is kept alive thanks to the Pho Sadet Yan Lipao Basketry Group, who possess the necessary skills required to produce such high quality work The artisans share the same objective - to protect this valuable form of expertise and support its continuity.
The dedicated group comprises 35 female members, whose main source of employment is derived from the local rubber plantation. They produce the basketry in their free time, which helps them to generate extra income for their households.
For over a century, local people have tapped into an abundant supply of yan lipao, which is a vine-like fern that flourishes in the area’s tropical forests. The plant matter is used to produce a number of useful items, including various baskets, as well as fish traps.
Several years ago, The SUPPORT Foundation under the royal patronage of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit played an important role in helping to equip villagers with more intricate designs and improved techniques. The villagers currently produce handbags, betel nut sets, and fashion accessories.
According to the group’s founder, Puangsri Chusuwan, the production of handbags requires the greatest degree of skill, as they are made from very thin strips of yan lipao (about one millimeter wide). The strips have to be meticulously intertwined, using a large needle, into delicate patterns. Some handbags feature nielloware rims, which provide the product with additional charm and added value.
Members continue to develop designs and motifs, inspired by a variety of surroundings and the contents of fashion magazines. The Pho Sadet Yan Lipao Basketry Group received a Five Star prize in 2011 under the government’s One Tambon, One Product project.
Prices of Yan Lipao basketery range from 3,000 to 40,000 baht, depending on the motifs selected and the degree of difficulty involved in producing the item.

Information Department in collaboration with Scholarship Division, Ministry of Education organising a Civic Course for Bruneian studying abroad that will be held from Monday, January 14 to Thursday, January 17. The 4 days event will be held at Dewan Pengiran Setia Negara, Information Department, Old Airport in Berakas and also at the SEAMEO Voctech Regional Centre, Gadong.
The guest of honour during the opening ceremony is Minister of Home Affairs Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman.
