HM: Call to immediately implement Islamic Criminal Law

Image JERUDONG, October 14 – A call was made for Brunei Darussalam to have Islamic Criminal Law immediately. We can no longer say no or wait as we already have everything, the ability and the power to implement it.

The matters were said by His Majesty The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in a titah (royal speech) at the official opening of the International Seminar on Islamic Laws. The seminar was held at Brunei's Defence International Exhibition Centre (BRIDEX) on October 12.

Also in-attendance were His Royal Highness Crown Prince Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, His Royal Highness Prince Haji 'Abdul 'Azim and His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Malik.

“Who are we in the presence of Allah The Al-Mighty to say no or wait, when the laws are not newly legislated, but have been stipulated in the Al-Qur'an and Al-Hadis since the 1400 years ago. Where are we with Al-Quran and Al-Hadis?” said His Majesty.

The monarch was speaking at the opening of the International Seminar on Islamic laws carrying the theme ‘Towards Implementing Islamic Laws’.

Without any hesitation, His Majesty said he wanted to see the implementation of one Act on Islamic Criminal Law Act to exist and implemented while not denouncing Conventional Laws, which will also be continue to be adopted. This means that an Islamic Criminal Act is needed, whilst at the same time Conventional Civil Law is not sidelined.

The three-day seminar involved working papers from Islamic law experts from Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Pakistan and Australia.
